Dream of Drums..

A rare and unique assembly of some of the greatest drummers in the world. Explosive talent, passion, humour and irresistible personality come together in a magical setting when seven diverse drummers create a profound and unforgettable experience. You’ve never seen drummers like this before!
Featuring Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr, Dennis Chambers, Kenwood Dennard, Horacio “El-Negro” Hernadez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Mike Mangini and Raul Rekow, the film engages us with the rich music styles and influences that are as dynamic as the performers themselves. We are lifted to another dimension as we connect to the powerful forces of nature embodied in the music of these master musicians. The creative and spiritual freedom of expression these artists display is overwhelming – from Latin rhythms to the wildly original compositions of Kenwood Dennard. Rock, jazz, Latin fusion, soul – these master drummers have backed up the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Carlos Santana and now – each other.
At the center of the film is the warm-hearted Nasyr, and his musician friends who share their knowledge with forty students for this incredible, unforgettable week of music and camaraderie. The overriding philosophy of these musicians is driven by love, compassion and joy of life. At the end of the film you will be tapping the rhythms that live within us all and the positive energy these masters display will continue to pulse through you for days to come.

Monday Mixtape by Felix Hall

Now encamped in oh so fashionable Milano, enjoying the delights of Calcio, Lavazza Oro & Panettone. Check this out! a mix that was originally done for that most excellent of UK apparel emporiums OiPolloi, 51 minutes of musical wickedness, all courtesy of Felix Hall. Felix is tour dj for The Specials and also a regular selector at London's top reggae revival session - Trash & Ready. His father's band were leaders in the UK's second-wave Ska movement, Felix however is very much a child of the 80's… The tunes on this mix being a killer combination of rootikal rub-a-dub and digikal dancehall, from the decade those styles rose to the forefront of Jamaica's musical output. All played off original vinyl pressings - there's some rare bits on here… more importantly though - it's all ace...Njoy!!

I'm going to go

Well peeps, winter's arriving and from next week the mytea@om crew are decamping to Europe for 4 months, so it will be a little slow around here for a while. The crew are takin' up the very generous offer of a Vdub campervan for the duration.Heading south from Rott'dam to the delights of Tuscany-Umbria, Milan to spend xmas, the mountains of Piedmonte for new year, along the beaches of the French Riviera, back up west-side to Breton and coast it all the way back to the land of the Nethers....That sounds exhausting just typing it...well we'll see how it goes, so for the time being, here's a bit of old-school early analog bass, discofied house for ya!....still sounding phat after 25 years. A remix from da house GodMaster Frankie Knuckles on Italian label FullTime Records....Hopefully get a couple of more bits up for ya before we offski!

Film - El Cantante

Marc Anthony gave his all musically and theatrically in bringing to life the story of the rise and fall of salsa legend, Héctor Lavoe (1946-1993), as told from the perspective of his wife Puchi(JLo). It's a tale of talent - creating salsa with Willie Colón, with the Fania All Stars, and as a soloist - and a story of disintegration - fueled by drugs, alcohol, partying, and depression. Puchi's voice - proud and querulous - dominates off-stage as Héctor's does on.excellente!

Città Londra

Dug out from the depths of the chest of unreleased gems from Jahtari's NET-7 label is this highly addictive vocal cut by El Fata on the so called "Survivor" riddim, recently appearing on Soom T's cracking "Dirty Money EP" A lyrical document from the dark days of Babbling Bush & Liar Blair, an intense tune with a powerful message, unstoppable flow and El Fata's ultra-sweet harmony treatment is bound to win hearts, minds and mash up the dance. Disrupt strips the tune down on da Bside inna bare version of the riddim...big up LDN!

Through Windows

Something that i downloaded earlier in the year and to be honest never got around to listening to, you know filed away never to be seen again..Until yesterday while trawling through the mytea@om archives, I came across this, from a young Dutch producer, Crookram (alias Chris Angelovski) an exceptional sample-master with a def touch with production and having no insistence on any particular style. His music has been made so colourful by using an unusually rich variety of downtempo, funk, hip hop, nu jazz elements and breakz, released simultaneously on the bankrupt recordings label and on budabeats netlabel. It is still available for free download All 18 tracks, so go get it!...great chill out material.

From the Bankrupt review;
"...an album that has been 5 years in the making in which musical genres like soul, funk, hiphop and library music have been combined with modern downtempo beats and movie samples. his ambition is to focus on atmosphere and moody vibes, something that's become quite uncommon in modern day music. you can expect scratchy records, mysterious movie samples and a great talent for production, elements which have been praised already by many people involved in the downtempo scene."

Madness Subsides

By now I had got through about 22 LP's/CD's, sitting on my balcony havin' a cheeky roll-up and an ice cold sapporo beer, the ambiance was sent..From the first few bars I felt transfixed, tune of a summer sunset, madness subsides....Pekka Pohjola is arguably the greatest electric bass players in Europe and here in equally great company with Tomi Parkkonen - drum and percussion, Eero Koivistoinen - soprano & tenor sax., Pekka Pöyry - alto and soprano sax, Paroni Paakkunainen - alto, baritone sax & piccolo and Coste Apretea - guitar. The main bassline of this piece was beautifully sampled by DJ Shadow on "Midnight In A Perfect World" Niceness!

An ultra-hip Danish combo with players, Bent Axen on piano, Allan Botschinsky on trumpet, Niels Husum on tenor, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Bjarn Rostvold on drums...The Original LP is a bit of a rarity these days...Enjoy!

Boys and Girls..

Have been listening to loads of jazz today and this has kept playing intermediately throughout..From the famed 'When Eight Bells Toll' director Etienne Périer's film “Des Garçons et des Filles” An obscure flick chronicling a pre 1968 attempt at commune life by a group of societies disillusioned youth..The soundtrack is right on point composed by French pianist and jazz drummer Errol Parker, with the help of a young Jean-Michel Jarre. It's the title track we visit in all it's jazzscat flava courtesy of the vocal talents of Rozza Wortham. Her velvety harmonies floating throughout the impulsion of rhythm. A true jazz dancefloor classic.

Pleaze mugwanti

Well just couldn't resist this after indulging in the traditional japanese Bon Odori festivities last week and taking in the rhythms of the TAIKO drums. Lifted from the kwaito house LP 'Ayobaness-The Sound of South African House', showcasing the South African production styles of Pastor Mbhobho, Aero Manyelo, DJ Steavy and on this tune by DJ Mujava. Out Here Records put the best 4 tracks on an EP, with this infectious brukbeat roller 'Mugwanti/Sgwejegweje' the stand out cut that found it's way into many global dj set's, the most notable being Kode9's mix for DJ-Kicks. Loving it up large... Killer!

Staying with some afrocentric electronica on Richard Sen's mixed blood cuts label, that dropped back in April. Lifted from the french world music label Buda Musique's compilation 'Ethiopiques, Vol. 4', sure many of you have seen the Jim Jarmusch film 'broken flowers' you'll recognise this...Zopelar constructs an infectious percussive house groove without spoiling the essence of the original piece...one for naturalizum...summer sweetness!

Dynamo

Is from respected spanish producer Pablo Bolivar dropping a limited edition 5 track vinyl EP on Galaktika Records. Loving this right now, i'm particularly feeling the 'Wood City' track where Bolivar takes his rhythm on a journey of deep sonic feelings with smooth vocals and heavy baselines. But here we delve into the first remix from one of the main men in the Bpitch Control family. Here Kiki goes for a classic remix that keeps the groove flowing throughout the entire 7 minutes, where he serves up delicious dubby synths as a main dish, while adding some rice percussions to it and delivering us an incredible funky Tech House tune for the summer. Get it!

Book `em

Loving this album right now from sample-twisting virtuosos The Books. Just released on Temporary Residence Limited. Dropping the track 'Thirty Incoming'.

Pitchforks review...."The Books have a terrific sense of humor-- and it makes The Way Out, an album built on eccentric vocal samples, a good-natured discovery instead of a cheap piece of mockery. Imagine if a blog had posted these clips of goofball hypnotherapist and meditation consultants, or found a tape of a boy and a girl swapping violent threats with each other: You'd chuckle and move on. But when the Books use these samples, they give them integrity. You find yourself engrossed with people who are alien but also familiar. The flotsam and jetsam of American culture aren't a cheap joke to the Books, but a source of endless discovery and joy". Read More...

Sunday Matinee - Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

The story of a man who battled severe physical setbacks to become a cultural icon. Punk's poet laureate - Ian Dury was a working-class hero whose drug and booze-fuelled career, Bohemian lifestyle and deft wordsmithery inspired fascination, fear and a fervent following. One of the true originals of the British music scene and the only man to successfully combine the energy and excitement of rock 'n' roll and funk with the bawdy humour, wit and home-spun philosophy of music-hall and of his native Essex.Ian Dury was born in Harrow. His father was a bus-driver and later a chauffeur, who split up with his university-educated mother soon after the war. The young Ian was struck down by polio at the age of seven. He spent several years in hospital and at a school in Sussex for the disabled. He left grammar school for the Royal College of Art, a stint teaching art and in 1971 the formation of his first band, Kilburn and the High Roads. They developed a minor following on the emerging London pub-rock scene and their first album, Handsome, was released in 1974.
But the defining moment came after Dury started writing with pianist Chaz Jankel and signed to the independent Stiff label and released the album 'New Boots and Panties'. With his band The Blockheads, Ian Dury exploded into the popular consciousness in 1978...

Rarely does a piece of music come along that takes me back to long summer days lounging in London's parks with friends tuned to pirate radio. Just such a project is about to drop on the planet mu label from Oriol, a native of Barcelona but now residing in the UK. His debut album ‘Night And Day’ has such depth of musicality and subtlety of an artist who knows exactly what he wants, and it’s also the perfect summer album. With lush synths and a truly fresh sound evoking the sunlight grooves of 80's boogie, 70's soul and mid 80's electro, every track is a winner, here we're dropping track 7, also released this week on a remix package....nJoy!

from the planet mu description

'Night and Day’ connects the dots between his musical tastes, from the 70’s fusion and experimentation of Herbie Hancock and Stevie Wonder to the lush house of Theo Parrish, Larry Heard and Recloose, into drum and bass and dubstep, he rewires these influences into something that's totally exuberant and fresh, a soulful fantasy, indebted to older musical styles but still sounding bang up to date, surpassing any niggles you might have that this isn’t just seriously good music. The album opens with ‘Joy FM’, mixing moog melodies with warm early Detroit techno. The next track 'Spiral' builds vox chords against diva vocals and rich talk box harmonies, while ‘Memories’ works up a nervous melody with staccato chords. ‘Jam’ lets things roll out with a loose musicality, irresistible early 80’s soul stylings and big moog synth. ‘The Process’ works broken beats under Philip Glass-like chords and funky keyboards, while ‘Flux’ crosses warm arpeggios with disco beats. 'Night And Day' captures the ambience of a party at sunrise at a Tropical destination, bittersweet and beautiful, followed by ‘Fantasy for N’ where beatless layers of electronics create a dreamy mood. ‘LW’ is a graceful mix of Jeff Mills techno energy and stringy disco, while ‘5 Bars’ finishes the album with tough beats and chords mixing it up with ambient atmosphere. Listening to ‘Night And Day’ is like being given an invite to an off-world utopia, and within time you’ll be grinning from ear to ear, as this is serious fun.
