Well peeps, winter's arriving and from next week the mytea@om crew are decamping to Europe for 4 months, so it will be a little slow around here for a while. The crew are takin' up the very generous offer of a Vdub campervan for the duration.Heading south from Rott'dam to the delights of Tuscany-Umbria, Milan to spend xmas, the mountains of Piedmonte for new year, along the beaches of the French Riviera, back up west-side to Breton and coast it all the way back to the land of the Nethers....That sounds exhausting just typing it...well we'll see how it goes, so for the time being, here's a bit of old-school early analog bass, discofied house for ya!....still sounding phat after 25 years. A remix from da house GodMaster Frankie Knuckles on Italian label FullTime Records....Hopefully get a couple of more bits up for ya before we offski!

The New York Record label ZE gets a richly deserved retrospective look back across its catalogue of mutant post-punk funk to warped disco from 1979 to 2009, Courtesy of Strut Records. ZE`s roster of artists was truly eclectic for the times, ranging from Suicide, Was (Not Was), Bill Laswell`s Material and Kid Creole.....And it`s this Kid Creole with COATI MUNDI track that always bring such memories for me bouncing around to DJock`s Jay Strongman & Mark Moore dropping the tunes at the Wharehouse club in London`s Electric Ballroom during the 8T`s....A big hit back in those days....Enjoy!

The Disco Files 1973-1978

Those lovable rogues over at Djhistory.com, Bill & Frank have just published a great new book by Vince Aletti, who was the first music journalist to write about Disco music in an article he penned called "Discotheque Rock '72 Paaaaarty" for Rolling Stone magazine in 1973. The Book apparently was inspired by an exhibition Vince had at White Colums in New York, called Disco files hence the title. The exhibition covered Vince`s limited edition 400 page collection of his Record World columns from Between 1974 and 1978. Also included is 800 contemporary club charts by the top US disco dj`s of the time, by the likes of Larry Levan, Tee Scott, Nicky Siano, Dave Mancuso to name just a few.

As a definitive history of disco, this is a must read.

Or Disco Nouveau as they are calling back in the UK. Disco fever is back in the article by Hanna Hanra, she interviews Jim Stanton, who started the iconic Horse Meat Disco in South London. Who says “When times are good, you could argue that people get turned on by darker, edgier music, such as drum’n’bass or electro. As soon as life gets harder, people look for something more uplifting, which is where disco comes in — it’s an escape....And i guess he could be right with all the huge uncertainties facing people all over the world.

But back in the late 70`s, when the times was so much harder, to us hip West End kids the dedicated followers of everything funky, we disliked the term disco. Disco was that light, cheesy, camp sound that we disliked, but disco also had a more harder percussive & edgier bass sound that was more to our taste, we called it Boogie.

At clubs like Crackers, Global Village - under the arches in Charing Cross, DJ Greg Edwards "The Best Disco in Town at the Lyceum, they played that sound. Import American 12" extended mixes, invented by Tom Moulton with longer instrumental beat sections especially for the DJ's to mix on their Technics SL-1200 , could be heard thumping around these dancefloors. From record labels like WestEnd, Prelude, SalSoul, T.K., AVI, Vanguard and Casablanca. From artists like Odyssey, Dynasty, Fat Back Band, Teena Marie, Brass Construction, Crown Heights Affair, Earth Wind and Fire, GQ, Shalamar, The SalSoul Orchestra, Chic, the list is endless!

So if this New Years Eve, your getting ready to glam & glitzy up to party, here`s a couple of tunes to bump too. One track that was massive on the Crackers dancefloor in `77 was this fine specimem of Boogie heaven. The name El Coco was in fact a cheeky drug reference to the stimulent of the time.
