The Good Leaf Remix

A remix that went under the radar but brought to us courtesy of the Fader.com
Spoek Mathambo's mix submerges the vocal in a disco swamp, adds flange and kicks up the back beat..intoxicating! Free mp3 on the down arrow..

Copa do mondo

So just 10 days to go to the greatest show on earth and the anticipation felt around the world is gathering excitement by the hour...As readers will know we at mt@o are avid followers of the beautiful game...or as our friends in the US would say 'what that game with 22 grown men kicking a ball around'...yes my dear cousins that game which is truly GLOBAL and brings people together like no other. Now for the tunes to go with, Next Stop Soweto Vol.2 is the second in STRUTrecords three-part compilation series showcasing ‘underground’ South African music of the 60's and 70's. Thanks to several years of painstaking research and vinyl archaeology by compilers Duncan Brooker and Francis Gooding they've uncovered some rare gems of SA soul, funk, R&B and psych sounds from a time when these unknown musicians plied their trade under an oppressive apartheid regime during the years before the tumultuous Soweto uprising of 1976...We're dropping 2 tracks from the comp a quality funky groover from the Soul Throbs with a track called 'Little Girl' and some uptempo boogie bizniz from The Heroes with 'Come With Me', just wish the tracks were longer, re-edits anyone?... An overall amazing collection of obscure South African music....An essential purchase to enjoy head-nodding during those half-time brakes,

Do The Astral Plane.

With such great new muzik popping out at every turn this year,it's becoming difficult to catch up with it all....what with the pace of life taking an upswing over here with our gorgeous new addition recently, I will endeavor over the coming weeks to post up the stuff that's been seen rockin' the walls of mytea@om's HQ.....One such (soon to be released) LP deserves extra special praise in the way it has been executed. Cosmogramma by that enigmatic LA producer of fine abstract wonky beats & riddims Flying Lotus.

A self-described "space opera" the long player 17 tracks in total is overflowing with the skills of harp prodigy Rebekah Raff and string arrangements from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson...The quality of this project has broken all known beatscene boundaries from every imaginable angle...."Do the Astral Plane" is my personal favorite here, a future boogie classic!
Released on Warp on the 3rd/4th of May. They are giving away 3 recent non album tracks....how nice!

United 8

No it`s not the number of goals that an opposing team will score against my beloved football club later today, but a cracking tune from 1972 given a well deserved re-press by Atlantic in 2004. "getting uptown (to get down)" is the kind of tune that you just can`t keep still when the ole plug-holes hear these vibes. With the shakers, tambourine, horns, guitar, drums all mashing together in one fine damn funky groove....enjoy!

"Gimme That Funk" # 14

An early 8T`s funky boogie club classic (Thinking Electric Ballroom) for ya!...The Whatnauts a trio outta Baltimore, USA, didn`t have much chart success but, if you recognise this surging infectious bassline, its because a more popular band Fat Larry`s nicked it all for their tune "Act Like You Know" released a year later. The track was by mixed by Tee Scott , one of those legendary NewYork dj`s. See post below.
And those fantastic rappers De La Soul used it on their track "Ring Ring Ring"
"Help Is On The Way" was released in `81 on Harlem International Records Inc.

An absoulute bomb!...enjoy!

Disco`s Not Dead.

Or Disco Nouveau as they are calling back in the UK. Disco fever is back in the article by Hanna Hanra, she interviews Jim Stanton, who started the iconic Horse Meat Disco in South London. Who says “When times are good, you could argue that people get turned on by darker, edgier music, such as drum’n’bass or electro. As soon as life gets harder, people look for something more uplifting, which is where disco comes in — it’s an escape....And i guess he could be right with all the huge uncertainties facing people all over the world.

But back in the late 70`s, when the times was so much harder, to us hip West End kids the dedicated followers of everything funky, we disliked the term disco. Disco was that light, cheesy, camp sound that we disliked, but disco also had a more harder percussive & edgier bass sound that was more to our taste, we called it Boogie.

At clubs like Crackers, Global Village - under the arches in Charing Cross, DJ Greg Edwards "The Best Disco in Town at the Lyceum, they played that sound. Import American 12" extended mixes, invented by Tom Moulton with longer instrumental beat sections especially for the DJ's to mix on their Technics SL-1200 , could be heard thumping around these dancefloors. From record labels like WestEnd, Prelude, SalSoul, T.K., AVI, Vanguard and Casablanca. From artists like Odyssey, Dynasty, Fat Back Band, Teena Marie, Brass Construction, Crown Heights Affair, Earth Wind and Fire, GQ, Shalamar, The SalSoul Orchestra, Chic, the list is endless!

So if this New Years Eve, your getting ready to glam & glitzy up to party, here`s a couple of tunes to bump too. One track that was massive on the Crackers dancefloor in `77 was this fine specimem of Boogie heaven. The name El Coco was in fact a cheeky drug reference to the stimulent of the time.

El Coco - cocomotion

And another outstanding track that is so very hard to find these days on Vigor records from `76, Rhythm Makers went on to become the band GQ. (shame it cuts off at the end)

Rhythm Makers - zone

Hope you all have a great time, and mytea@om wishes you all a very happy New Year....I`m off to the country for a few days, so see you all in 2009.

She got her man..

You know when its time, when a lady crosses your path and you just can`t get her out of your mind....I had held out for 40 years, but eventually she got her man...
This track is the one we danced too after cutting the cake at our wedding party held in Otaru, Hokkaido in August 2004.I hope it brings you as much joy as it did us.
