Kinshasa Superbad

Following on from the DRC Music  Kinshasa 1.2 concept LP dropped last year by Damon Albarn, Warp Records  & Oxfam, there now comes a new musical documentary 'Congotronics vs. Rockers' an evolving cast of 10 Congolese musicians and 10 members of various indie-rock bands who've come together to record and play live gigs across the world. Filmmaker Pierre Laffargue has chronicled the Superband - which includes members of Konono N°1, Deerhoof, and Wildbirds &  Peacedrums plus Juana Molina and others..A project conceived by Marc Hollander and Vincent Kenis from Crammed Discs in Belgium.Here's the first glimpse of the promo Reel.

Here you check out the Congolese members of the live group on their way to last years Fuji Rock festival in Naeba, Japan.

This is Audio Sutra

A lost mix has just resurfaced thanks to the Bossman himself, who's unearthed this little gem from 2001...At the time i was participating in a DJ tour of Japan, when towards the end of the trip we was invited to perform at the WA project/Peace Parade in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. As a rehearsal for the gig we both went into a friends studio and messed around with samples, jingles & differing styles, it got recorded. A bit ruff around the edges but still sounding great...Enjoy!

World Peace Mix

As another 6.5 Earthjolt hits Japan this morning over breakfast and a blogpost, it's a good time to let you know about an old cohort of mine who has just dropped an Xclusive mix from back in 2002 on GenBass. I first meet Pathaan when he used to come into my record shop and bug me silly for new tunes with his unmistakable signature of world globetronic sounds that set off a very dear friendship with him. Together we started a club night AUDIO SUTRA @ the famous central LDN cavern called Bar Rhumba in the late '90's, with such legends of the dance music scene as Pressure Drop, Howie B, Paul Daley (leftfield), Tsuyoshi Suzuki & record shop co-founder Pete Herbert.

Pathaan says about the mix;

I’m not a politician but am human and sickened by the current world affairs.......... During a time of religious conflict, war, oppression, famine and racism etc etc, can music change & influence man ? I BELIEVE IT CAN !!! So here begins a story I feel I must share and a mix for you to download. Just under a decade ago, as a mark of respect and to acknowledge in my own way the 1st anniversary of 9/11, this was a 'Stoned Asia Music' priority release in Sept' 2002 that was never released in this form. The reason being, a few of the distributors felt nervous about the tracklisting especially the 1st track and the point I was trying to make through the music !!

So sit back and allow me to take you, ‘back to the future’ on one of my musical voyages around the globe – From September 2002, 15 EXCLUSIVE & HARD TO FIND tranquil productions from artists around the globe....Smiles & Hugs !!! Pathaan x

Ryukyus Roots.

The next 5 days is the Japanese holiday they call "Golden week" and for the last few years the mytea@om crew have headed off to Taketomi-jima in the Yaeyama Island group south of Okinawa, much closer to Taiwan, than mainland Japan. We always stay at a lovely family Minshuku in the town "Nohara Suo" (tel-85-2252) and every evening after a hard days sunbathing and delicious Okinawan dinner, the fun begins when free bottles of awamori appear, the 3 stringed sanshin comes out and a good old Okinawan singsong begins. Back in 2001 the first edition John Potter's book "The Power Of Okinawa" came out, which i never did pick up a copy, but now a completely revised, expanded and updated 2nd edition has surfaced with more chapters and more interviews with the people involved in making roots music from the Ryukyus. One such duo Ryukyu Underground, who are Keith Gordon, originally from the UK but now resident in Okinawa, and his cohort, American Jon Taylor have been fusing the sounds of the Ryukyus with contemporary westernized studio technology to bring a whole new sound to okinawan traditional folk music..Lifting two tracks from the 2005 Ryukyu remixed collection.
