ATCQ on screen

Just caught the sundance screener of the new docu-film directed by Michael Rapaport Beats Rhymes and Life: The Travels Of a Tribe Called Quest, charting the band's triumphant and turbulent 20-year career. ATCQ has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history, and regarded as iconic pioneers of hip hop. A must see travel around the groups up & downs.
I can still remember the buzz around the basement of the newly opened Black Market records in SoHo, London when their "Description of a Fool" promo dropped in the UK..

From July 8th around the US and soon the world!!

History Of The Amen.

This has been doing the rounds of the bloggosphere for a long time now, i'm sure some of you have seen it already, but following on from the previous post, it's apt to share now. The vid clip is a fascinating, 20-minute narration of the history of the "Amen Break," Nate Harrison's 2004 video is an interesting theory on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable drum break. Check out the 1Xtra history as well!

Beyond Boundaries!

With a heavy heart i post this as the humanitarian tragedy continues in the middle-east...I`m not getting into the rights and wrongs of what`s happening in Gaza at the moment but in my eyes. A child in Sderot is the same as a child in Gaza, and anyone who harms either is not human.

Just listen to the lyrics of this tune and you`ll get where I`m coming from!

"Boundaries, terrortorial disputes, talking about boundaries when we`re talking about absolutes, when people lose their faces and preoccupied with races...this land is my land, this land is your land, but it was their land first, who`s world is it anyway...it`s easier to hate and not tolerate, In the name of the earth, the people die and babies cry, we find out why or live a lie....Makes me wanna holla , throw up both my hands"

(A word of warning the video contains some gruesome images, for those that prefer not to watch such images it would be better just to listen to the audio)

Covers: "Les Fleurs"

Here is a little series we can explore, of the great tunes that have been covered by various artists . First up is "Les Fleurs" An outstanding vocal track by Minnie Riperton on her first solo album after leaving the band Rotary Connection. Written by her husband Richard Rudolph and Charles Stepney. A shimmering soulful tune with beautiful strings, horny horns, jazzy piano, A cross between Burt Bacharach and Marvin Gaye.
